Hungary is a fantastic place for a birding trip; it is well known as a top spring destination but also offers a busy autumn schedule. Thousands of birds involving many species use the various habitats as a crucial stopover. Huge numbers of Common Crane, Tundra Bean, White-fronted and Greylag Geese use the fields to feed and the fish-ponds to roost. Herons such as Great White, Night Heron and Bittern can be found along with migrant waders and ducks including Ferruginous Duck. The scenery is impressive; the birds are great with much to see.

Itinerary
Below is our planned itinerary for the trip, although we try our best to stick to our itineraries, occasionally it does become necessary to change things around a little bit due to the weather or the presence/lack of birds at particular sites during the time of our visit.
A flight to Budapest will see us meeting our Hungarian guide with our transport before heading into the countryside to begin birding. Depending on flight times we may be fortunate enough to have a full day of birding ahead of us in the Bukk Hills. We may well have seen Syrian and Middle Spotted Woodpecker plus Hawfinch near the hotel before the sun has set. We shall be travelling about 2-2.5 hours.

We shall be birding in the Bukk Hills area searching for a variety of woodpeckers including Black, White-backed, Grey-headed and Lesser Spotted as well as commoner woodpeckers and other woodland species. In addition the roadside pylons, steppe, fish-ponds and reed-beds of the Hortobagy (Hort-o-barge) will provide opportunities to see among many others Saker Falcon, Imperial Eagle, Great Bustard, Red-throated Pipit, Lapland Buntings, Rough and Long-legged Buzzards, Penduline and Bearded Tits, huge flocks of Common Crane and perhaps flocks of Lesser White-fronted Goose (many of the Scandinavian population stop off en-route to Greece). There is always the chance of a late breeding/summering bird or rarity such as Black Stork or Great Black-headed Gull. Travel time between sites is less than 2.5 hrs but regular birding stops are made.

On the last day we may have time for a morning birding session and will certainly take in any suitable birding en-route before heading back to the airport for our return flight home. Travel time c2.hrs.

Please note this itinerary may be altered due to the weather or the presence/lack of birds at particular sites during the time of our visit. Some flight times allow birding on day one, others do not but allow more birding time at the end of the trip, for this reason we politely ask you take account of this and allow for the changes.

Please see the terms and conditions section of the brochure. Flights and insurance are not included, insurance is essential to travel. Anser can help with flights/insurance on your behalf if you prefer not to book your own, early booking leads to cheaper airfares with £80.00 being the norm for Easyjet/Ryanair flights from Bristol, Gatwick and Luton, morning outbound flights and evening return flights are possible to maximise birding. It the clients responsibility to get to the departure airport but a transfer may possibly be arranged if enough people are travelling from Gloucestershire. A charge will be made for this service to cover the costs. Please note; Anser cannot be held responsible for changes in flight times or delays etc.
We will need to stay in at least two different areas to make the most of the birding, When birding in forests it is very important to be very quiet to locate and see the target species.

Clothing & Equipment
Warm clothing such as a fleece with a waterproof should the evenings be cooler or we encounter a shower. If sunny then sun-cream, a hat, sunglasses and lighter clothes are advisable. Waterproof boots with adequate ankle support should be worn. Wellies have been taken on previous visits but only used on a very small number of occasions. A telescope and digital camera are desirable as the views and digi-pix opportunities are good. An inflatable travel neck pillow is worth taking for comfort when napping in the bus or plane.
Environment
Most areas are flat but a reasonable level of fitness is needed for this trip. Uneven tracks are also encountered but most provide easy walking. We are never too far from the bus. Some wet and boggy areas can be found underfoot in some places and waterproof boots are essential. It's easy to book your holiday with Anser birding...
