This mountainous island is famous in birding terms for the endemic Corsican Nuthatch which as the name suggests is only found on this beautiful French island. Apart from the marvellous scenery including several snow capped peaks over 2500m other habitats include forest, maquis scrub and alpine species with coastal birds thrown in for good measure. Some decent wetland sites are also on offer so a variety of birds are on offer when the spring migration is getting underway.
A wide range of Mediterranean species can be found on this island to add to the list of birds, interest is further bolstered by the flora and perhaps mammals.

Itinerary

Below is our planned itinerary for the trip, although we try our best to stick to our itineraries, occasionally it does become necessary to change things around a little bit due to the weather or the presence/lack of birds at particular sites during the time of our visit.

We should be able to fly from Bristol or Gatwick, low cost airlines yet to confirm schedule. A lift share is possible to the airport and can be arranged after booking. Depending on flight times we should be able to get some birding done before dark.

A full two days will be spent birding and exploring the island for its breeding birds, endemics and migrants. Priority is given to the endemic species.

Depending on flight times we may be able to do a morning or even full day of birding before heading back home.

the flights do not work in our favour we may add another day to the trip at £100.00 supplement per person.

What is included in the cost of your holiday?

All transport costs in Corsica are shared within the price stated, all accommodation and meals (except lunch), entrance fees to reserves and the services of guide/guides. Drinks and items of a personal nature are not included. We will use a hotel/guest house near to our main birding site which will be at least two-star standard. They offer a typical set menu of Corsican cuisine or we may eat at a restaurant. The breakfasts are typically continental in a buffet style. Evening meals will be two or three courses. Hotel and possibly menu details can be forwarded on request when at least four clients have booked.

Other Information

Lunch stops can be made each day to collect provisions at a supermarket or just stop at a suitable café for lunch. Flights and insurance are not included. Anser can help with flights/insurance if you prefer not to book your own. Easyjet fly to Corsica from Bristol and Gatwick with other airlines offering cheap flights to the area. Please note; Anser cannot be held responsible for flight time changes or delays etc. As we are limited in time so will need to concentrate on the target species of the area, weather may influence our birding. A lift share to the airport may me arranged after booking.

Clothing & Equipment

A telescope is desirable and recommended but Anser guides do carry Leica/Swarovski telescopes for them to locate birds and give directions, they are set up on the target birds for clients to have look. Binoculars are essential. It is best to bring clothing to suit weather for a typical spring birding trip in Britain. Waterproofs, fleeces and waterproof walking boots/shoes with good support are also recommended for this trip.

Environment

Travelling about by car/minibus will be on winding mountainous roads, inevitably it takes longer to get anywhere than what we are used to certainly in the West Country. We will use our transport to climb as high as possible at mountain birding sites but some walking on slopes and steeper tracks near to our transport is likely. Stony ground is possible as are slippery paths or grassy slopes.
